On October 15 I successfully defended my PhD thesis in sport & health sciences: Energy availability and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) among Icelandic athletes. I thoroughly enjoyed the fruitful discussion with my opponents, Dr. Therese Fostervold Mathisen and Dr. Johanna Ihalainen, and thank them both for the careful evaluation of my work. I am also very grateful for my doctoral committee that consisted of my two supervisors (Professor Sigridur Lara Gudmundsdottir and Professor Anna Sigridur Olafsdottir) and Professor Ylva Hellsten. Finally, all the amazing athletes/participants, colleagues and international network, reviewers of my work, family and friends played a crucial role in this journey.
The overall aim of my PhD and the RED-I research project was to assess energy availability and occurrence of REDs symptoms among Icelandic athletes from various sports. Associations of REDs symptoms with energy availability, dietary intakes and patterns thereof were subsequently evaluated.
The full thesis, including the three published articles, is available at Open Science.
